It's the Identity - NOT the Costume

Season #1

In this episode, we peel back the layers on why modern "servant leadership" often feels performative and draining. What if the problem isn't that we're not serving enough... but that we're treating servant as a costume we put on instead of an identity we already have? We start with a childhood memory: tying a towel around my neck as Superman—feeling unstoppable, yet it was just a costume. Kids blur the lines with superhero play (the "Batman Effect" shows temporary boosts in perseverance and self-control), but the cape always comes off. As adults, we do the same: putting on "professional" attire, saying the right words, smiling through tough calls—yet coming home exhausted, cynical, and lonely. Surface acting studies show faking emotions to fit roles leads to emotional exhaustion and burnout over time. The bigger costume? The Western myth of independence. Psychologists Markus & Kitayama describe the "independent self"—autonomy and self-reliance as freedom. It sounds familiar: "I'm in charge of my own destiny... I'm a self-made man..." Hmmmm... where have we heard this before? Self-Determination Theory reveals overemphasizing autonomy at the expense of connection backfires—higher loneliness, exhaustion, burnout in individualistic cultures. Deep down, we feel the tug toward real connection—not shallow likes/follows (which leave us emptier), but devotion to something or someone greater. Evolutionary biology, neuroscience, and attachment research show we're wired for outward orientation: giving ourselves away activates reward systems, satisfies belonging, and brings fulfillment. Denying this wiring through the "independence" costume starves us; embracing our servant identity resolves the ache into peace, joy, and wholeness. The one thing to carry away: Servant isn't a costume we put on to lead better or feel more spiritual. It's our inescapable identity. We're always serving something—the only real freedom is choosing what or whom we serve, and ensuring it's worthy of our devotion. Reflection prompt Take a moment today: What are you devoting your time, energy, and heart to? Is it worthy? No pressure, no judgment—just honesty. That's where the shift begins.
