Are You Ready for the Coming Storm?

Buckle up, business owners—the seas are getting rough. The past few years have seen some turbulent waters: “Drill, baby, drill,” Trump’s China tariffs, COVID lockdowns, supply chain snarls, Bidenflation (peaking at 9.1% in 2022), political polarization tearing at our seams, two assassination attempts, and the 2024 election. Now, we’re bracing for Trump 2.0, DOGE, Tesla, and tariffs making waves again. As Bachman-Turner Overdrive belted out, “You ain’t seen nothin’ yet.”

Whether you cheer him or jeer him, Donald Trump will reshape the U.S. economy, global trade, government, and geopolitics over the next four years. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs)—the backbone of 44% of U.S. GDP (SBA, 2024)—face a gale-force storm. You’ve got two choices:

  • Hunker down and pray you ride it out in port.
  • Set sail and steer your ship through the storm

As a former U.S. Navy officer, I’ve weathered storms onboard ships.  Sure, we’d batten down the hatches, but if we could, we’d get underway. Why?  A ship at sea handles storms better than one tied up in port. Out there, a skilled captain charts the course and helms the ship—outrunning the gale, skirting its edge, or finding calmer waters. Sometimes, they can even harness the winds and waves to accelerate toward their goal.

It’s not a joyride. Seasickness sucks—I’ve seen sailors pray for relief, their biggest fear that they will live one more minute.  But a seaworthy ship, with a steady captain and a tight crew, sails on, damage minimal, the team tougher and closer than ever.

Your business is like that ship. Keep moving forward, and you’ve got options: dodge the worst turbulence, find a shortcut, or ride the winds of change and outpace your competition.  Sure, some team members may struggle—some will stay loyal, others might leave, and a few could jump ship mid-storm. But imagine emerging from these turbulent years miles ahead, with a dedicated, united crew ready for anything.

That’s the promise of Strategic Leadership. Let’s dive into what it takes to be the captain your SMB needs to thrive in chaos—and how one small business did just that. Let’s chart a course, together, through the coming storm.

What Makes a Strategic Leader?

Strategic leadership isn’t a corner office or a fancy title—it’s a way of seeing the world. It’s the spark behind Elon Musk’s vision of a multi-planetary future or Angela Merkel’s steady hand through Europe’s economic storms. So, what sets strategic leaders apart from the pack?

Tactical managers shine at executing the now—streamlining processes, hitting deadlines, and managing resources. They’re the engine room of your ship. Strategic leaders, though, focus on purpose and possibility.  They ask, “Where are we headed, and why does it matter?” They don’t just fix leaks—they redesign the ship to sail faster, farther, and smarter.

At its heart, strategic leadership blends direction with inspiration. It means:

  • Painting a bold vision of a future that doesn’t yet exist.
  • Rallying your team to build it, step by step.
  • Balancing big dreams with the realities of today’s choppy waters.

Think of it as navigating by the stars—crafting a clear goal, communicating it with heart, gaining buy-in from your crew, and staying resilient when waves crash, all while keeping your eyes on the horizon.

Here’s the truth: strategic leadership needs tactical management to succeed. Without managers handling daily operations, building systems, and securing resources, the vision stays a daydream. Whether you wear both hats in your SMB or lean on a team, these roles are two sides of the same coin.

Can anyone become a strategic leader?  Yes, if you’re willing to do the work.  Strategic leaders aren’t born with the charisma, mindset, or skills they’ll eventually need.  They grow them through intention and practice, so that when the time comes to sail into stormy seas, they’re ready to navigate through them.  Let’s explore the foundational traits that make strategic leaders the captains SMBs need right now, with a real-world story to bring it home.

The Pillars of Strategic Leadership

These seven qualities can be your compass to lead your business through today’s chaos—economic uncertainty, political divides, and global shifts like AI reshaping 30% of jobs by 2030 (McKinsey). Master them, and your SMB can thrive instead of just survive.

1.  Vision: Seeing Beyond the Noise

Strategic leaders are visionaries with their feet on the ground. They cut through today’s chaos—rising costs, AI disruption, tariff talks—and imagine a future that’s bold yet doable. It’s not a fuzzy dream; it’s a vivid story that pulls people in.

Elon Musk doesn’t just pitch electric cars—he sells a sustainable, interplanetary world. Strategic leaders ask, “What could we become? How can we make a difference?” They weave complexity into narratives that spark action, using empathy to make the vision feel urgent and personal.

Try This: Write a one-sentence vision for your SMB—e.g., “We make eco-friendly packaging affordable for small retailers.” Share it at your next team huddle and ask, “Does this fire you up?” Tweak based on their nods or blank stares.

2.  Emotional Intelligence (EQ): The Heart of Connection

EQ is your wind in the sails. It’s knowing your emotions and reading your team’s to build trust and defuse tension. As Daniel Goleman, EQ pioneer, puts it, *“Without it [EQ], a person can have the best training, an incisive mind, and endless ideas, but they still won’t make a great leader.”*

Suppose a supply chain delay hits your SMB. A manager dives into logistics; a strategic leader notices the team’s stress, validates it, and reframes the snag as a chance to shine. By listening deeply and empathizing, they win loyalty through connection, not orders.

Try This: Book a 15-minute coffee chat with an employee. Ask, “What’s going well? What’s tough?” Listen without fixing, building trust like Mandela did in South Africa’s fraught talks.

3.  Communication: Clarity That Sparks Action

Strategic leaders turn big ideas into words that stick. They skip jargon, simplify without dumbing down, and tailor their message—whether to investors or warehouse staff.  Angela Merkel didn’t lean on charisma; her clear, credible words guided Germany through economic storms.

They’re also great listeners. They ask questions to learn and to challenge.  They invite feedback, and adjust, ensuring everyone sees their role in the mission.

Try This: In your next meeting, pitch a goal in two minutes, linking it to your vision—e.g., “This new software saves us time to serve customers better.” Ask, “What’s unclear?” to sharpen your delivery.

4.  Planning: Bridging Vision and Reality

A vision without a plan is just hope; a plan without flexibility is just wishful thinking. Strategic leaders craft flexible roadmaps—setting priorities, spotting risks, and adapting like chess players eyeing the board. They pull in their team for ideas, breaking goals into steps that feel clear and doable.

Satya Nadella’s pivot to cloud computing at Microsoft wasn’t a rigid blueprint—he planned boldly and tweaked as markets shifted, always aiming for the horizon.

Try This: Pick a 90-day goal—say, “Grow online sales 10%.” List three steps (e.g., “Test new ads”) and one risk (e.g., “Low clicks”). Share with your team, asking, “What can we add?” to build ownership.

5.  Motivation: Igniting Purpose

Strategic leaders do more than rally the troops—they spark a sense of purpose that keeps the fire burning. They customize motivation—praise for some, freedom for others—so everyone feels invested. When setbacks hit, they point to progress, not blame, showing resilience like Nadella facing Microsoft’s doubters.

Try This:  At your next team update, share a story of how your work helped a client—e.g., “Our quick delivery saved their deadline.” Tie it to each role: “Your packing made it happen.”

6.  Celebration: Honoring the Journey

Celebration is more than champagne and parties—it’s about spotlighting effort and reminding folks why their work matters. A strategic leader might call out a win in a Slack channel or share how a team’s fix wowed a customer. These moments fuel momentum and gratitude, keeping spirits high.

Try This:  Send a weekly note praising a specific win—e.g., “Shoutout to Mike for solving that billing glitch!” Watch your team light up.

7.  Resilience and Adaptability: Staying the Course

Strategic leadership is a marathon with obstacles—tariffs up 10% (Bloomberg, 2024), clients cutting budgets, or AI shaking your industry. Leaders hold fast to their vision AND pivot when needed, weathering storms with humility. Nadella stuck to Microsoft’s cloud bet despite skepticism, adapting to keep his team aligned.

Try This: After a hiccup—say, a lost contract—write three lessons (e.g., “We need faster follow-ups”). Share one with your team to show setbacks are steps forward.

Case Study: How One SMB Sailed Through the Storm

Here’s an example. Meet Sarah, who runs a 30-employee catering company in Ohio. When COVID hit, events dried up—revenue tanked 60% in 2020. A tactical manager might’ve slashed staff and waited. Sarah chose strategic leadership.

She crafted a vision: “We bring joy through food, no matter the crisis.” She listened to her team’s fears (EQ), learning they worried about jobs. She communicated clearly, promising, “We’ll pivot together.” Her plan? Shift to takeout meal kits, using local ingredients to stand out. She motivated staff by tying their work to community support—every kit fed a family. Weekly, she celebrated wins, like a chef’s new recipe, keeping spirits up. When clients hesitated, she stayed resilient, tweaking menus to fit budgets.

By 2021, Sarah’s business was back, stronger than ever, with loyal staff and a new revenue stream. Her strategic leadership turned a storm into a tailwind, proving SMBs can thrive with the right mindset.
